30 Mar 06 Local broadcaster Roger Eastwood passes away AngloInfo
Roger Eastwood passed away on Monday 27th March. He was a pioneering broadcaster on English language radio for the south of France. Roger joined Radio Nova International in 1981 when it was based in Camporosso, Italy. At that time, with no commercial radio in France and near anarchy on the Italian airwaves, several stations set up powerful transmitters near the Italian/French frontier, beaming signals along the French coast. Roger stayed with Radio Nova through its move to Seborga in 1982 until 1984 when it suspended regular programmes and went up for sale. During his time with Radio Nova he presented daily shows from Camporosso, weekend evening shows from Seborga and successfully sold advertising for the station. In 1984 Roger joined Radio Sovereign in Camporosso, Italy  as a weekend presenter. The station later became Riviera Radio. In 1986, Roger was a founding member of Sunshine Radio based in Antibes, France. Exploiting a loophole in a new media law permitting commercial stations in France, Sunshine operated legally from 1986 - 1989. Roger presented daily shows and set up the station's marketing. Roger then joined Riviera Radio in Monaco where he presented a weekend arts programme, later co-hosted with music critic and local artist Jonathan Brown. Roger will be remembered for his erudition, civility, charm, kindness and intelligent wit, as well as his mellifluous voice and personable presentation style. His music programmes carried his own signature mix of cool pop, classy jazz and soft rock. MD
